Wedding card design (mainly illustrations) and production for a friend, Elijah who’s based in UK, and the lovely Rowena. The scene is set against a European backdrop, with a couple running for the train that represents the beginning of an endless, lifelong journey together.

Digital illustration on Photoshop with a tablet. The 160 wedding invitations took about two months (Mar-Apr) to plan, illustrate and produce.

The folded card is 100mm x 210mm, printed on both sides of white glittery paper. Envelope is in metallic grey of the same material, additionally handcrafted with a tag for writing names secured by two metal tacks, as well as a sticker seal for each set of card.

So today had me fishing about in the thrash bag/can twice for entirely different reasons I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve an infinity with it. Who the hell rummages in the thrash! -.-

My payment via ATM to a certain online service provider hadn’t been exactly recorded under my name and hence the outstanding, as they claim, amount of $100+. I gingerly poked around in the bag and quickly gave up on the two discarded receipts; it could be explained away, anyway. The second instance had to do with a piece of A4-sized paper scribbled on by my dad with apparently very important work-related details, which he had accidentally shredded – thank God, into quarters not bits – with others the computer table can gladly do without. So I emptied the recent contents of the thrash (oh gross, peppered with used tissue; it was in my grandma’s room after all) and meticulously went through the torn contents, laying them out on the floor until I found what my dad had described in the sms. As I fixed and taped the said pieces together, I thought, this is so turning into a scene you find only in dramas. The next time I’m going to think thrice before dropping things into the bin, really.

By the way, I’m sporting a new hair colour – guess?

A new project in the works: Miracle Moments newsletter, in fact a 32pg A5 booklet, for church; design and general template carried forward from the previous inaugural issue I designed at the end of last year. When, after the Chinese translations have come in and after a round or two of proofreading, this is complete, I’m all set to working on CJ’s wedding card (long overdue! I’m sorry) and have it produced by this month.

Perhaps I should kick myself in the head for making the most unwise decision of this year (oh come on, it’s only February? omg) for agreeing to meet up with the panel of executives in the coming weeks to have them review my portfolio as well as for me to learn about the public installation project. By unwise I mean mindlessly jumping at the opportunity without noticing that you are certainly overestimating your own abilities. What’s installation??

Anyhow, I’m prepared to present myself as a nervous wreck, but first not without some proper reading and research on that certain label that would most definitely put me in the worst possible light if I have zero knowledge of which. It’s the least one can do right?

Now I don’t even understand why I’m crashing headlong into this. *groans*

I’ve been on this project since March, on and off, and the job scope involves designing the logo and creating the identity, designing flyers as can be seen above, designing the EDM (electronic direct mail), creating a html website (visit it!) and one more flyer yesterday for the last minute holiday plans.

If you’ve friends from Primary 5 to JC 2 who, or if you yourself, need a bit of help in improving academically, why not check us by calling 81266623 (Wei Jie) or 91391479 (Da En) directly to arrange something? Alternatively, you can write to mystudies34 @ gmail.com. Help me spread it around, alright? Thanks! <3

It seems inexplicable, that the overseas internship was like a dream, a random three month period of my life spent in Shanghai (of all places lol) and now I’ve been back for nearly a month. Here’s the link to the IMD page that links to all our OSIP blogs; amongst all, mine’s the least complete. There was simply too much to do, too little time.

Suddenly I had to pick up the pieces where I left it three months ago, and, when I have yet to finish documenting about the internship experience, it’s hard to continue with anything else. Yes I cut bangs, hello to the end of my very bad hair cycle that lasted for almost a year, and had my braces wires changed (dentist said it’s the last stage and I may be able to remove it by the end of this year) and am wearing two 3/16″ rubber bands which constantly snaps when I eat my food or try to yawn that pull both rows of my teeth inwards forming a nice neat curve.

Got myself new handphone accessories while I was there, in a giftshop in Shanghai. Apparently Jimmy Liao’s works are really well received; they can be found printed on tissue boxes, packs, made into handphone straps, pencil holders, snowglobes, and whatever you can think of. And yes you haven’t seen my new phone, have you? I got it a short while before my Taiwan trip back in April, SE Z770i, a very lovely flip phone that I always wanted to own. Now it has got figurines of the two main characters from one of my favourite stories “A Chance of Sunshine”.

School started, with this being our very last semester. The LAST! Goodness all the semesters and blocks flew by just like this T.T Anyway, there was the comm session with Mos, though we attended the one meant for year 2s due to (heheh) some circumstances. Had no chance to listen to what Mos had to say about the Diploma Show, however. Over the course of three months in SH, there was no chance of eating western food, as in the proper kind lol, so the DES chicken chop was greatly missed by yours truly. Now that we’re back, they’ve added a new dish – spaghetti with chicken sausage – and it’s my new fave XD

Gave out edamame soy beans (the exact replica of the ones found on Strapya.. I guess their products are ALL made in China, but the price difference is…….), shared by all four of us who went to SH, on the first day of school to the whole of IMD. Absolutely the best way to destress, that squishy thing :D just in time for the commencement of THE FINAL YEAR PROJECT. See for yourself~

Visual Presentation Essentials and 1/4 of FYP is over! It totally feels like the holidays, not that there wasn’t any work to be done, but I spent the past 4 weeks being a useless unproductive bum. FYP proposal was crap. Plus, some two random cat themed posters for VPESS. I sorta only liked the last assignment, a book design based on a nursery rhyme, which was rushed out at the last minute and I’m not going to show it cause I used a couple of images off the internet (was allowed, so don’t you complain) to add on the the illustrations.

Outing on Saturday with the usual gang, minus half the number because we went to Marina Sq to catch ~~~~~ .REC, roar!! One of the better zombie + handheld camera technique films around, or so I heard. Language was Spanish that sounded very very much like Italian. Ah! La porta! The 5.30pm show was sold out, so we went for the 7.30pm show and got first row seats (as I was telling them, if only I got first row seats for Arashi concerts XD). Separated; Hajar Jacq and I at the extreme right, and Justin Joshua Daniel and Azmi on the other side. For a long time I haven’t seen horror flicks in the cinema and I didn’t really knew what to expect, thus, in the “worst case senario” I planned to peep through my fingers or just bury my face in Hajar’s shoulder and scream haha! Sure enough there was much tension built up and scenes which induced series of screams from the audience, just nearly not creepy enough to leave you sick in the stomach and sleepless at night. *PHEW* A very cool film to watch with friends.. because while anticipating shock and mutated-virus-infected-bloody-human-turned-zombies (and looking out for the bloody funny insane woman), you get screams accompanied with much laughter, which gets more frequent towards the end for some reason. Do watch it while it’s still screening!

While in SH, we visited a place at Tai Kang road which they claimed is similar to Holland V here. Both had the same feel, but the latter took up a smaller area of course. After .REC we dropped by and chilled at Cold Rock (their version in SH is called Cold Stone. Talk about originality..). I had an expensive banana smoothie lol. Holland V is so far away! By the time I got home it was like after midnight, haha.

The guys said that they’ve a plan to set aside Thursday evenings to jog, you know be healthy and all that, I really want to engage in some form of exercise recently but not this week. I’ll be joining them, mentally, in Shanghai 8D

To make up for the lack of updates and hereafter (for the next n weeks in fact), I’ve decided to up the rest of the youth camp publicity stuff, mostly done in April. For humour as well, the flash presentation below was based on an idea proposed by the camp committee, which is about characters who, at first confident, fail at their jobs/roles and eventually come to the realisation of their real identities.

They sourced out the comic strips from a variety of mangas (therefore I do not own any of them, except one of two filler frames that I drew, but it doesn’t really matter), discussed about the storyline and from there I picked comic frames to go with the story and arranged them together with photos taken when we conducted an informal photoshoot in the youth room. I got a lot of kick out of editing their photos so that they look like they exist in the manga =D Character dialogues were fun too.

The <s>last of the holidays</s> CDI has officially started. Submission for mobile module was yesterday noon, rushed my work overnight and had little sleep. And we started with the CDI project right after, until late afternoon. In these two weeks, four of us (and three seniors also working on the project) will have to be in school everyday from 9 – 6pm. Unbelievably taxing, and when the next block begins, we would have a major project module (P4, what else) and an elective module on top of this project. All these for a chance in having internship overseas.. I’m doubtful if I’ll survive till then =/ Yong is overseeing the CDI, and will own us for the next 6 weeks. Oh, by the way, you should really see his mini puffer fish! It feeds on mini mini snails!

…appreciation.

In the past, I very often created blogskins and templates for myself and at my friends’ requests. Looking back, designing has been so simple, that comes naturally, and so enjoyable. There came a time when I was unclear of where my hobby was leading me to, WJ told me that each of my designs could fetch at least $10. I was elated! I have never experienced the thrill of knowing that someone would actually pay to use my designs.

Now that I’m pursuing web and multimedia design, it really seems that I have come a long way to be what I am today. I’m proud to tell you that the worth of what I create has increased tenfold, twenty-fold and more. I don’t regret being in IMD. Umpteen times you told me, you will become a great designer — and I will.

Thank you for your encouragements, WJ,
for being such a good friend, and also, a significant part of my secondary school days.
